Reading 'Excuse Haste' around the image of a tortoise, this paste seal has a wonderfully crisp and neat engraving. The meaning was typically an apology for the rushed nature of the communication inside the sealed envelope. But I think nowadays we could view its likeness to the saying 'less haste, more speed'
