What a statement pendant for the bright, gemstone jewellery lover! We have dated this beautiful piece to the early Victorian era of 1837-1850. The gemstones are in excellent condition and are all natural.
At its centre, the piece holds a stunning natural opal that we have added in the place of an old empty mourning panel. It measures 19x7mm and is approximately 2.25 carats. Surrounding this are 20x 2.5mm natural pearls, a circle of 20x 3mm diameter flat cut garnets, and finishing with another circle of 34x 3mm natural pearls.
The original gemstones are in superb condition, and are held in crimped collet settings known as 'piecrust', with the new centre opal in a gold rubover bezel. The garnets have a pink tone, and the pearls are very well matched with an excellent silver cream lustre. The opal has the full spectrum of colours including the rare red flashes.
The whole setting is closed backed and there is a large pendant bail, with internal measurments of 8.5x4.5mm through which a substantial chain could be threaded.
