What an incredible Victorian snake necklace this is, with a classic combination of gemstones and a most delightful face!
It's a good wearable length of 15.5 inches approximately and is in excellent antique condition.
The snake head has beautiful gold work with scrolling details, granulation and the tail has a cross hatch snake scale pattern. The chain is the original snake scale link chain and the original matching locket back heart dangle hangs from its mouth. There are some very minor indents to the back of the snakes head mentioned for accuracy.
The three collet and claw set Garnets measure 7.5x6mm 8.5x6.5mm and 8.5x6.5mm, the central one has a very small chip to the top right edge between two claws, it measures 0.5mm and does not detract from the overall look of the piece. There is also one claw missing from the central Garnet setting, but it is quite secure. The other gemstones, including the Pearls and cabochon Garnet eyes remain in very good antique condition with only age appropriate wear.
It flashes a toothy smile from the side profile and the clasp fastens securely, the mourning panel in the heart is empty.
The chain graduates from 4.5mm wide to 2.5mm where it attaches to the snakes head.
A truly wonderful piece of history we simply do not come across very often anymore, especially not with all the original parts present and in such gorgeous condition. This has been very well cared for.
