Antique Victorian sardonyx signet ring 18 carat gold with engraving

It was engraving inside the shank of this ring that captured my heart. It reads 'To Eva from Annie Sep. 25 1915-1925' I need to know who Annie was and why Eva gave her this ring! Whilst the engraving is for the early 20th century, the hallmark puts the ring at 1900, just slipping into the end of the Victorian era.
 
There are flea bites to the edge of the Sardonyx and some gentle surface wear. The ring has a buttery yellow gold colour, sporting surface wear to the metal from age and love, but that just makes it better in our opinion!
